Barred Cochin Bantams are an Asiatic breed covered with an extraordinary abundance of soft, fluffy colored feathers. The Cochins were introduced from China in the mid-1800s as Shanghais, and they created a sensation wherever shown. Today this breed is still a beautiful show bird and highly prized for exhibition. They make remarkably good pets, and a pet Cochin can live between 8-10 years. These Bantam size Cochins are one of our family favorites.
Barred Cochin bantam chicks are primarily black with a white dot on top of the head. They have white necks, abdomens and wing tips. They have single combs and black feathered, yellow legs and feet. The adult plumage is black and white barred with the females appearing darker than the males. These feather-footed birds have an excellent disposition making them a good choice for a backyard flock or urban setting, and they weather the cold well. Cochin hens lay small, brown eggs, and are good setters. This chicken is also great around children making it a perfect pet for the family farm. Many people who love the Bantam Cochin chickens also like the Standard Size version of the breed.
