Black Cochin chickens are a massive Asiatic breed covered with an extraordinary abundance of soft, fluffy, feathers. The Black Cochin has beautiful black feather pattern with a shiny iridescent green sheen making for a beautifully black bird from tip to toe. Cochins were introduced from China in the mid-1800s as Shanghais, and they created a sensation wherever shown. Today this breed is still a beautiful show bird and highly prized for exhibition.
The Standard size Black Cochin is one of our family favorites. These large, feather-footed birds have an excellent disposition making them a good choice for a backyard flock or urban setting, and they weather the cold well. Cochin hens are fair cream/brown egg layers, and good setters. Cochins are great around children making it a perfect pet for the family farm. Many people who like this breed of chicken also like the miniature version of the Black Cochin Bantams.
