The California White may be one of the most successful and productive hybrid egg laying strains of chickens in history. They are the result of crossing a White Leghorn hen with a California Grey rooster. California Whites are attractive chickens with the light weight and upright style typical of the Mediterranean breeds. They are mostly white with little black specks in some feathers and have a single comb. California Whites lay a prolific number of X-Large white eggs. 260 or more eggs per year can be expected.
California Whites are also remarkably hardy chickens, with a long lifespan, and they lay for a longer period of time than White Leghorns. They are fast growers as well and start laying at early age. California Whites do well in cold climates and continue to lay well even in autumn when other breeds slow down. These hens will lay a lot of large eggs; have good feed to egg production ratios and good for chickens for backyards. Raising chickens for eggs at home can be fun and relaxing. Free range chicken eggs are great tasting eggs and this hybrid chicken breed has good reflexes for predator avoidance, however, they are white and easily seen.
