Our Hatchery is one of only a few sources of the Silver Brakel in the United States.
The Silver Brakel is an “Extremely Rare Breed ” we imported from the United Kingdom and is a well-known breed in France and England, known as the “every day layer”. The Braekel or Brakel is one of the older European chicken Breeds. Its history dates back to 1416, when it was mentioned as a successful poultry breed of the Brakel Region of Belgium. The Braekel is not cultivated for its meat, but merely for its egg-laying qualities. The Silver Brakel is capable of producing 180 to 200 white eggs a year. Braekel chickens are very hardy and active breed. They can tolerate almost all climates. They are very strong and well resistant to diseases. They are good foragers and tend to roam around the yard and fields, looking for insects, seeds, worms and greens. They are also very good for free range system.
