White Leghorn chickens rank as the world’s most prolific egg layers, laying an average of 280 per year and sometimes reaching 300–320. Leghorns or ‘Leggerns’ as they are known as in the US, are a heritage breed that is incredibly popular around the world. The White Leghorn is the preferred chicken used in commercial white egg production. Leghorn chickens are classed as a dual purpose breed, as they have enough meat to make a decent table bird, as well as being a productive egg layer. The White Leghorn has yellow skin and legs, pure white feather plumage and ear lobes, bright red single comb and wattles. This breed is very active, hardy, non-broody and lay beautiful Large to X-Large pure white eggs. White Leghorns have a good feed-to-egg conversion ratio. Leghorns tends to be very active, and loves to free range. Baby chicks are pure white and have yellow legs and feet.
