The Cornish Cross Broiler is a cross between two or more lines of birds that have been selected for specific traits. When crossed in proper combination, superior commercial products result. Cornish meat birds, fully fed on a high-energy broiler ration, can be processed for broiler meat as early as 6 weeks! Less than two pounds of feed is needed to produce a pound of live broiler.’ Although females of broiler crosses are sometimes kept for layers, they are a very poor choice for production of eggs. If feed is not restricted when raising broiler cross pullets, the hens produced become too fat to be efficient egg producers.
Depending on your feeding program, Cornish Cross can become very large. Hens can weigh more than 10 pounds and males more than 12 pounds if feed is not restricted. Cornish Cross Broilers have very large feet and legs. The birds have long, deep bodies with broad long breasts, which is very desirable. When feed is not restricted from adult birds, they become very lazy and sluggish and sit around eating most of the time.
Cornish Cross chicks have single combs, are light yellow in color and have wide breasts with the legs set well apart. Most of the time the chicks are very large because the breeders lay very big eggs. They have clean, yellow feet and legs that are much larger than other breeds.
“Cornish Game Hens” are Cornish Cross broiler females fed a high-energy ration and processed between 4 and 5 weeks of age. The breast is split and spread to ‘present a wide breasted bird.

CORNISH CROSS MEAT BIRD CARE
The CORNISH CROSS BROILER is a very unique and remarkable bird. We like to think of it as the BBB – Big Breasted Broiler – it has very broad breasts, large thighs, beautiful white plumage, and yellow skin. Its rapid growth is remarkable, along with great feed efficiency. You can actually see it grow before your eyes. There are special steps to follow when raising the Broilers. In order to avoid bad legs and Heart problems, we recommend the following steps…
- Restrict access to feed to 10 hours per day for the first 3 to 4 weeks.
- Be sure the chicks have adequate feeder space so most of the chicks can eat at the same time.
- Limit protein in the feed to 20-22%.
- Limit light to natural day length or 12 hours (whichever is longer).
- Keep chicks warm with good ventilation, but avoid drafts.
- Keep air quality high by keeping ammonia low.
- Do not use straw for litter – use pine shavings (Not Cedar) or ground corn cobs.
If you want the birds to be a consistent weight at butcher, purchase either all Females (hens) or all Males (roosters). If you want them to mature at different sizes, purchase the Straight Run. The Females also make excellent Cornish Game Hens if butchered at 2 to 2 ½ lbs. live weight.
